How to Prepare for Your DOT Physical Exam
Getting a DOT physical exam is an important part of keeping your CDL and staying safe on the road. Whether it’s your first time or you’re renewing your medical card, knowing how to prepare can help you pass without stress.
At DOT Modesto, we’re here to make sure your exam goes smoothly. Here’s everything you need to know to get ready.
What Is a DOT Physical?
A DOT (Department of Transportation) physical exam checks your overall health to make sure you’re physically and mentally fit to drive a commercial motor vehicle (CMV). It’s required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and must be done by a certified medical examiner—like us at DOT Modesto.
What to Do Before Your Exam
To make sure your visit is fast and successful, follow these simple steps:
✅ 1. Bring the Right Documents
Come prepared with:
- A valid driver’s license or photo ID
- A list of current medications (include doses and prescribing doctors)
- Glasses or contacts (if you use them)
- Medical records for any ongoing conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart issues
- CPAP compliance report (if you have sleep apnea)
- DOT medical card (if you’re renewing)
✅ 2. Take Your Medications as Prescribed
Don’t skip your medication before the exam. For example, if you take blood pressure medicine, make sure you take it as scheduled.
✅ 3. Get a Good Night’s Sleep
Sleep affects your blood pressure and overall performance. Aim for at least 7–8 hours of sleep the night before your DOT exam.
✅ 4. Avoid Salty Foods and Caffeine
Salt and caffeine can raise your blood pressure. Try to avoid energy drinks, fast food, and coffee at least 24 hours before your appointment.
✅ 5. Stay Hydrated
Drink water before your exam—it helps with the urine test, which checks for conditions like diabetes or kidney problems.
✅ 6. Be Honest About Your Health
If you have a medical condition, don’t hide it. Bring any documentation your doctor has provided. Being honest can help you avoid delays or disqualification.
What Happens During the DOT Physical?
During your CDL physical exam, we’ll check:
- Vision and hearing
- Blood pressure and pulse
- Urinalysis
- General physical exam (heart, lungs, spine, nervous system)
- Medical history review
If you pass, you’ll get your DOT Medical Certificate, valid for up to 2 years (or less if follow-up is needed).
