Hearing Requirements for a DOT Physical

Hearing clearly is just as important as seeing clearly when you’re behind the wheel of a commercial vehicle. During your DOT physical, your hearing will be tested to make sure you can respond to horns, emergency signals, and warnings—keeping you and others safe on the road.

At DOT Modesto, we’re here to help you understand the hearing requirements for a DOT physical and how to prepare.

🔊 Why Hearing Matters for Commercial Drivers

The FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) sets hearing standards for drivers to:

  • Reduce the risk of missed audio warnings (sirens, horns, brakes)
  • Improve communication on the road
  • Ensure driver awareness in all driving environments

DOT Hearing Test Requirements

You must pass one of the following to qualify:

🟢 Option 1: Whisper Test

  • You must be able to hear a forced whisper from at least 5 feet away in one ear, with or without a hearing aid.
  • The whisper must be at a volume you can’t lip-read—it has to be soft enough to test true hearing ability.

This test is quick and commonly used during standard DOT exams.

🟢 Option 2: Audiometric Test

  • Your hearing loss cannot be greater than:
    • 40 dB at 500 Hz
    • 40 dB at 1,000 Hz
    • 40 dB at 2,000 Hz
  • These levels are measured using an audiometer (a machine that plays tones at different frequencies and volumes).

This option is used if the whisper test isn’t conclusive or if hearing aids are involved.

🦻 Can You Wear a Hearing Aid During the Test?

Yes! If you use a hearing aid, you are allowed to wear it during the exam. Just make sure:

  • It’s in good working condition
  • You bring extra batteries or backup devices
  • You inform the examiner before the test

If you pass the test with a hearing aid, your DOT card will be marked with a restriction stating you must always wear it while driving.

What Can Disqualify You?

You may be temporarily disqualified if:

  • You don’t meet either test’s criteria
  • Your hearing aid isn’t working properly
  • You fail to complete a formal audiometric test when required

In most cases, these issues can be resolved with updated hearing aids, retesting, or clearance from an audiologist.

📋 Tips for Passing Your DOT Hearing Test

  • Bring your hearing aids (and backup batteries)
  • Avoid loud environments before your exam
  • Rest well and stay calm—stress can impact how well you hear
  • Let the examiner know if you need clarification or another try
