DOT Physicals for New CDL Applicants
If you’re applying for your first Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), getting a DOT physical is one of the most important steps. It proves to the government—and your future employer—that you’re healthy and safe to operate a commercial vehicle.
At DOT Modesto, part of Affection Health Care, we make the process quick, affordable, and stress-free for new drivers just starting their CDL journey.
🚛 What Is a DOT Physical?
A DOT physical is a medical exam required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). It ensures commercial drivers meet the health standards to operate:
- Big rigs (Class A)
- Box trucks (Class B)
- Passenger buses (Class C)
- Other vehicles requiring a CDL
📋 Why New Applicants Need It
Before you can:
- Take the CDL permit test
- Schedule a road test
- Start working for a trucking company
You must pass a DOT medical exam and get your Medical Examiner’s Certificate (MEC), also called a DOT medical card.
👨⚕️ What Happens During the Exam?
The medical examiner will check:
- Vision – Must be 20/40 or better in each eye (with or without glasses)
- Hearing – Must be able to hear a forced whisper at 5 feet
- Blood pressure – Must be under control
- Urine test – Checks for diabetes and kidney function
- General physical exam – Heart, lungs, reflexes, spine, etc.
🧾 What to Bring with You
- A valid photo ID
- A list of current medications
- Glasses or contacts (if needed)
- Medical history or documents for chronic conditions
- CPAP logs (if you have sleep apnea)
- Specialist notes (if required)
⏱️ How Long Does It Take?
Most exams take 30 minutes or less, and you’ll usually get your DOT card the same day, unless follow-up tests are needed.
✅ Tips to Pass Your First DOT Physical
- Eat a healthy meal the night before
- Avoid salty foods and energy drinks
- Take your medications as prescribed

🧠 What If You Have a Medical Condition?
Don’t panic. Many conditions like:
- High blood pressure

…can be managed with medication and doctor clearance. We help new applicants navigate the process and give you time to submit additional documents if needed.
