DOT Exam Do’s and Don’ts
Getting ready for your DOT physical? Whether it’s your first time or your fifth, knowing what to do—and what to avoid—can make all the difference.
At DOT Modesto, we’re here to help you pass your exam with confidence. Here’s a simple list of Do’s and Don’ts to make your appointment quick, smooth, and stress-free.
✅ DO: Bring the Right Documents
- A valid driver’s license or ID
- Your current or expired DOT medical card
- A list of all medications, including doses
- Your glasses or contacts (if needed for vision)
- CPAP compliance report (if you have sleep apnea)
- Specialist letters for any chronic conditions
❌ DON’T: Forget Your Medication
Take your regular medications the day of your exam—especially blood pressure meds. Skipping them can lead to disqualification.
✅ DO: Get a Good Night’s Sleep
Being well-rested helps keep your blood pressure in check and reduces stress during the exam.
❌ DON’T: Eat Salty or Sugary Foods Right Before
Avoid energy drinks, soda, salty snacks, and heavy meals before your appointment. These can affect your blood pressure or urine test.
✅ DO: Drink Water
Stay hydrated! It helps with the urine sample required for your exam.
❌ DON’T: Hold Back Information
Be honest with the examiner. Trying to hide medical issues may lead to delays or denial of certification.
✅ DO: Ask Questions
Not sure about something? We’re here to help. Ask us anything before, during, or after your exam.
❌ DON’T: Wait Until the Last Minute
Book your exam 30–60 days before your card expires. This gives you time for follow-ups or paperwork.
