After completing your DOT physical, you’ll receive a Medical Examiner’s Certificate (MEC)—also known as your DOT medical card. But what do all the boxes, checkmarks, and expiration dates really mean?

At DOT Modesto, we make sure our drivers understand exactly what their results mean. Here’s a simple breakdown so you know what to expect.

📝 What You’ll Receive

After your exam, you’ll get:

  • A Medical Examiner’s Certificate (Form MCSA-5876) if you pass
  • A summary of your exam results
  • Instructions on what to do next (such as submitting your certificate to the DMV)

✅ What “Qualified” Means

If your card says you’re “Qualified,” you met the federal standards set by the FMCSA. You’re good to drive!

📆 Validity Period

  • 2-Year Card: You have no serious health concerns.
  • 1-Year or Less: You have a medical condition (like high blood pressure or diabetes) that needs closer monitoring.
  • Temporary Medical Card: You may need to return for follow-up testing before full certification.

🚩 Common Reasons for Shorter Validity

  • Elevated blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Sleep apnea
  • Vision or hearing issues
  • Use of certain medications

❌ What Happens If You’re “Not Qualified”?

Don’t panic! If you don’t pass:

  • You’ll be told exactly why
  • You may need to provide follow-up documentation (like a specialist letter)
  • You can retake the exam after addressing the issue

🛑 Restriction Boxes

Sometimes your certificate will list restrictions, like:

  • Wearing corrective lenses required
  • Must carry a CPAP compliance report

These are reminders to help you stay compliant.

📤 Submitting to the DMV

It’s your responsibility to send your DOT physical results to the DMV (unless your state does it automatically). Missing this step could lead to CDL suspension.
