🩺 What to Expect from a DOT Re-Certification Exam
If you’re a commercial driver, your DOT medical certificate typically lasts up to 24 months. Before it expires, you’ll need to go through a recertification exam to stay compliant.
✅ Here’s what to expect:
1. It’s Just Like Your First Exam
- You’ll undergo the same checks: vision, hearing, blood pressure, urinalysis, and a physical exam.
- The goal is to confirm you’re still medically fit to drive.
2. Bring the Right Documents
- Your current (even if expired) DOT medical card.
- A list of current medications.
- Any relevant specialist letters (if you have chronic conditions like diabetes or sleep apnea).
3. Be Honest
- Disclose all medications, recent surgeries, and health changes.
- Hiding information may delay or deny your certification.
4. Prepare Ahead
- Get enough sleep the night before.
- Avoid salty or fatty foods, alcohol, and caffeine prior to your appointment.
- Take your medications as prescribed.
5. Same Standards Apply
- The medical examiner will use the same FMCSA guidelines.
- If your health has changed significantly, you may need additional clearance or testing.
