If you’re a commercial driver, your DOT medical certificate typically lasts up to 24 months. Before it expires, you’ll need to go through a recertification exam to stay compliant.

✅ Here’s what to expect:

1. It’s Just Like Your First Exam

  • You’ll undergo the same checks: vision, hearing, blood pressure, urinalysis, and a physical exam.
  • The goal is to confirm you’re still medically fit to drive.

2. Bring the Right Documents

  • Your current (even if expired) DOT medical card.
  • A list of current medications.
  • Any relevant specialist letters (if you have chronic conditions like diabetes or sleep apnea).

3. Be Honest

  • Disclose all medications, recent surgeries, and health changes.
  • Hiding information may delay or deny your certification.

4. Prepare Ahead

  • Get enough sleep the night before.
  • Avoid salty or fatty foods, alcohol, and caffeine prior to your appointment.
  • Take your medications as prescribed.

5. Same Standards Apply

  • The medical examiner will use the same FMCSA guidelines.
  • If your health has changed significantly, you may need additional clearance or testing.
