Common Misconceptions About DOT Physicals
If you’re a commercial driver, you’ve probably heard stories about the DOT physical—and not all of them are true. At DOT Modesto, we often hear worries from drivers that are based more on myths than facts.
Let’s clear up some of the most common misunderstandings, so you know exactly what to expect and can head into your exam with confidence.
❌ Misconception #1: You Have to Be in Perfect Health to Pass
Truth:
You don’t need to be an Olympic athlete to pass your DOT physical. The exam is about making sure you’re safe to drive, not about being in flawless shape. If you have managed conditions like high blood pressure or diabetes, you can still qualify.
❌ Misconception #2: All DOT Exams Include Drug Testing
Truth:
The standard DOT physical does not include drug testing. That’s a separate test requested by your employer or part of a DOT drug and alcohol program. Your urine test during a DOT physical only screens for sugar, protein, blood, and other health markers.
❌ Misconception #3: If You Wear Glasses or Hearing Aids, You’ll Fail
Truth:
Not true. If you need glasses or hearing aids, just bring them. As long as you can meet the vision and hearing standards with them, you’re good to go.
❌ Misconception #4: You’ll Be Disqualified for Having a Medical Condition
Truth:
Not necessarily. Conditions like sleep apnea, high blood pressure, or diabetes don’t automatically disqualify you. What matters is how well they’re controlled and if they affect your ability to safely operate a commercial vehicle.
❌ Misconception #5: You Can Cheat the Exam
Truth:
Trying to “cheat” your blood pressure or vision test is risky and could delay or disqualify your certification. It’s better to prepare the right way and be upfront about your medical history—we’re here to help, not punish.
✅ The Truth: It’s All About Safety
The DOT physical is about keeping you and everyone else on the road safe. At DOT Modesto, we make the process smooth, respectful, and easy to understand—no judgment, just support.
