Can You Wear Glasses or Contacts During a DOT Exam?

If you rely on glasses or contact lenses to see clearly, you might wonder if that will be a problem during your DOT physical exam. The good news is—yes, you can wear glasses or contacts during your DOT exam. In fact, if you need them to meet the vision requirements, you must wear them.

Let’s break it down so you know exactly what to expect.

Vision Requirements for DOT Exams

To pass the vision portion of your DOT physical, the FMCSA requires that you have:

  • At least 20/40 vision in each eye, with or without corrective lenses
  • A horizontal field of vision of at least 70 degrees in each eye
  • The ability to recognize traffic signal colors (red, green, amber)

If you use glasses or contact lenses to meet these standards, that’s perfectly acceptable.

👓 What Happens If You Wear Glasses or Contacts?

  • You’ll wear them during the vision screening
  • The medical examiner will record that you require corrective lenses
  • Your DOT Medical Card will include a note that you must drive with glasses or contacts

✅ That’s it—simple and straightforward.

Important Tip:

Be sure to bring your glasses or contacts to the exam. If you forget them and cannot meet the 20/40 vision standard without them, you may not be certified that day.

🔁 What If Your Prescription Has Changed?

If your vision has recently worsened or your prescription is out of date, you may want to:

  • Visit your eye doctor first
  • Get a new prescription or updated lenses before your DOT exam

That way, you’re set up for success and avoid any delays.

🤓 What If You Switch Between Glasses and Contacts?

That’s totally fine! Just be consistent and wear the pair that gives you the clearest vision during the test. Either option is allowed.

👁️ What If You Still Don’t Meet the Standard With Lenses?

If you still can’t see 20/40 or better with correction, you may be referred for further testing or may not qualify—unless you apply for a vision exemption through FMCSA.

Bottom Line

You can absolutely wear glasses or contact lenses during your DOT physical. Just make sure you bring them, and make sure they help you meet the FMCSA’s minimum vision standards.
