Vision Standards for Commercial Drivers

If you’re applying for or renewing your commercial driver’s license (CDL), your vision is one of the most important things checked during your DOT physical exam. Why? Because seeing clearly—both up close and at a distance—is critical for safe driving.

At DOT Modesto, we help drivers meet the FMCSA vision standards and keep their certifications up to date. Here’s what you need to know about the vision requirements for commercial drivers.

👁️ What Are the FMCSA Vision Standards?

To pass the vision portion of your DOT physical, you must meet the following standards in each eye:

  • Visual acuity of 20/40 or better with or without glasses or contacts
  • 70-degree field of vision in the horizontal meridian
  • Ability to distinguish red, green, and amber traffic signal colors

These standards apply to each eye individually, not just both eyes together.

👓 Can You Wear Glasses or Contacts?

Yes! You can and should wear corrective lenses if you need them to meet the vision standards.
If you pass the test while wearing glasses or contacts, your medical certificate will include a restriction that you must always wear them when driving.

🔍 How Vision Is Tested During Your DOT Exam

At your DOT physical appointment, we’ll test your:

  • Distance vision using a standard eye chart
  • Peripheral vision to check your field of view
  • Color vision using simple color recognition tests

These tests are quick and painless.

What If You Don’t Pass the Vision Test?

If your vision is worse than 20/40—even with correction—you won’t be certified right away.
However, you may qualify for a vision exemption through the FMCSA, especially if:

  • You have good vision in one eye
  • You’ve driven commercially for years without safety issues
  • Your doctor can provide documentation and support

The process takes time but can restore your certification.

Tips for Passing the Vision Exam

  • Bring your current glasses or contacts
  • Make sure your prescription is up to date
  • Get a checkup with your eye doctor if your vision has changed
  • If you use contact lenses, bring backup glasses just in case

📝 Vision Conditions That May Need Documentation

Some conditions may require additional clearance, including:

  • Cataracts
  • Glaucoma
  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Macular degeneration
  • Eye injuries or surgeries

Bring paperwork from your eye specialist if you’ve been treated for these.
