FMCSA-certified DOT physical exams
⚙️ What If I Don’t Pass?
At DOT Modesto, we know that sometimes things don’t go perfectly during a DOT physical. The good news is — not passing doesn't mean the end of the road! Here's how you can get back on track:
🔄 How to Reapply
If you don’t pass your DOT physical:
- You are allowed to fix the issue (like controlling your blood pressure or getting updated paperwork).
- You can reapply at any time — there's no mandatory waiting period unless the issue is disqualifying by FMCSA rules.
- Simply call us to schedule a re-exam once you've corrected the concern.
📌 Tip: Bring any new paperwork or medication updates with you to your re-exam!
🕒 Temporary Medical Cards
Sometimes, you might qualify for a short-term Medical Examiner's Certificate, such as:
- 3 months (for issues like temporarily elevated blood pressure or recent surgery recovery)
- 1 year (for stable, but monitored, medical conditions)
Short-term cards allow you to keep driving while you follow up with your doctor or manage ongoing health conditions.
📌 Tip: Stay on top of follow-up appointments so you don’t have a gap in your certification!
⚖️ Appealing or Correcting an Issue
If you believe the exam results were incorrect, or if new medical evidence becomes available, you have options:
- Bring updated specialist letters (cardiologist, sleep specialist, etc.)
- Request a second opinion with a different certified examiner
- Fix the disqualifying condition (like lowering your blood pressure) and schedule a new exam
If needed, FMCSA allows drivers to apply for a medical exemption for specific conditions — but this is a longer federal process.
📌 Tip: Most issues can be corrected faster by bringing the right paperwork and showing proper treatment progress!
